Research

The Department of Economics at Birmingham has a long and distinguished history of research, with important advances in mathematical economics and econometrics being made here.

Nowadays, members of the department are active in research across the broad range of economics. We actively collaborate with researchers in other schools of the university (including the Business School, Computer Science, Education, Engineering, Public Policy and Public Health) and with economists elsewhere in the UK and abroad. The university's Collaborative Research Network on Governance is hosted by the department. We have obtained research funding from the British Academy, the Department of Education and Skills, the Economic and Social Research Council, the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, the European Union, the Leverhulme Trust and the World Bank, amongst others.

Research in the department is organised into five research groups:

Econometrics

Economic Theory

Environment, Trade and Energy

Money, Macroeconomics and Finance

Political Economy and Economic Policy
