Welcome to the Department of Economics at the University of Birmingham. Economics teaching and research have a long tradition at Birmingham, dating back to the establishment of the Faculty of Commerce in 1903.
The modern department has about twenty five academic staff members, with a wide range of research interests in areas such as applied economics, economic theory, econometrics, environmental economics, finance and trade.
The department offers a variety of undergraduate programmes, and has an active graduate school involving research students and postgraduates on taught courses.
The department received a score of 23 out of 24 for the quality of its teaching in the QAA Subject Review (2001).

The 2008 Research Assessment Exercise found that 65% of our research (practically two-thirds) is world-leading or internationally excellent, placing us in the top 20 UK economics departments on this measure. See our research pages for more information on our areas of expertise.
The Department of Economics at the University of Birmingham is delighted to advertise 1 ESRC Quota Award for postgraduate study, covering full tuition and monthly maintenance stipend, for MSc + PhD (1+3 years) or PhD only (3 years) studies in Economics at the University.
Economics Department ranked 4th out of 63 by Guardian League Table 2009
The Department now offers MSc Programmes in Mathematical Finance, in Environmental and Resource Economics and in Economic Policy, in addition to our other MSc Programmes.
